CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 Review

Computer Associates came with their latest and better edition of CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 to propose a step forward in quality and features. Besides firewall, antivirus, antispyware, antispam, and parental control, the suite now contains data migration and a Web site inspector to identify malicious sites.

One thing you should be aware of is that, at install, CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 offers to set up the Yahoo! toolbar and make Yahoo! your default search engine which together with CA’s own Web site Inspector causes your browser to be kind of top-heavy.

The present firewall is obviously much better than what CA presented last year when it swapped from ZoneAlarm’s one to its Tiny Personal Firewall but improvement is still to be had.
According to PCMAG, CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 passed most of the port-scanning tests but failed the Gibson Research’s ShieldsUp (CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 leaving from two to four less-used ports closed but not stealthed ). Opposite to using NIS 2008 or Panda Internet Security 2008’s modern styles of program control, the CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 user has to decide every time a program attempts to connect to the Internet whether to permit it.

Though it did not survive to fake mouse-clicks attack as Kaspersky and Norton products did, CA’s new version security system still showed high protective measures. The firewall offers a wide range of additional features — it can guard against malicious attachments from incoming e-mail and watch outgoing mail for behaviors, it can also block cookies, ads and script, having the ability to prevent the sending of predefined personal data in e-mail or over the Web.

As PCMAG described it, using client-side attacks from the Core Impact penetration testing utility proved itself worthy in revealing some of CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 vulnerabilities in the suite’s protection system which recommends Norton Internet Security 2008 as a better candidate to your security needs.

Trend Micro’s AntiVirus plus Anti-Spyware 2007 came in dead last in our “Virus Stoppers” antivirus roundup test of eight products. Its disappointing finish was primarily due to its lackluster performance at detecting malware samples: The program missed almost one in five samples, for a poor catch rate of 82 percent.

Trend Micro did somewhat better at proactively detecting unknown malware using one-month-old signature files, but even here, its 43 percent detection rate was the third-worst showing. Coupled with a relatively expensive $40 price tag and no renewal discount, Trend Micro’s performance leaves much to be desired.
On the plus side, the program installed smoothly, was easy to use, and includes good default settings for the average person, such as an automatically scheduled full-system scan. The software provides a user-configurable scheduled scan and checks for definition updates every 3 hours. These defaults are a snap to change via an intuitive and smooth interface that will appeal to even the most nontechnical user.

One particularly useful feature scans for known Microsoft product vulnerabilities. If a machine is missing an important security patch, for example, the application guides the user to Microsoft’s Windows Update site to download and apply the appropriate updates and patches.

Trend Micro’s AntiVirus scans e-mail traffic over the POP3 and SMTP protocols, but unlike almost every other program we tested (except for Grisoft AVG 7.5 Anti-Virus Professional Edition), it does not scan HTML traffic. Also, Trend Micro’s product stands alone in being unable to launch a manual file scan through a right-click within Windows Explorer, a weakness that the company says it will remedy in future updates. And the application’s antispyware protection has an annoying habit of labeling tracking cookies as dangerous spyware.

We tested the Vista version of TrendMicro AntiVirus plus Anti-Spyware 2007 for our “Virus Stoppers” roundup. An XP version of the software is also available.

Kaspersky Lab announces that the Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 has successfully passed compatibility tests for the Cisco Trust Agent 2.1 application, a component of the Cisco NAC solution . Based on the test results, Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 was certified “Cisco Compatible”.

The testing was performed in the laboratory of AppLabs Technologies, a service company.

Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 is a powerful and flexible tool for effective, centralized management of Kaspersky Lab products on networks of any size and complexity with support for remote offices and mobile users.

Cisco Network Admission Control (NAC) is a set of technologies and solutions providing control over network access, which is based on an industry-wide initiative implemented under the leadership of Cisco Systems. NAC enables customers to provide Internet access only to secure end-devices (e.g., workstations, servers and PDAs) which meet the requirements defined by the system administrator and to restrict access to devices that do not meet these requirements.

“The Open Space Security concept, on which the sixth generation of Kaspersky Lab business products are based, involves providing protection for all nodes on the corporate network regardless of their location. An important security component under this concept is checking mobile devices that return to the corporate network for compliance with its security policies. Cisco NAC support implemented in the Kaspersky Administration Kit does this by allowing access to the local network only for those computers which have antivirus protection meeting the requirements of the security policy,” says Alexey Kalgin, Deputy Product Development Director at Kaspersky Lab.

BitDefender Total Security 2008

The time of the year has arrived when the online security manufacturers swoop on mass to release their latest wares and so it is with BitDefender Total Security 2008, which from the look of the new interface has been designed to go head-to-head with Symantec Norton 360. It’s a slim 41MB download, so even if you’re on dial-up you won’t find it too much of a taxing download.

The interface has been simplified and is built around four keys functions, Security, Parental Control, Tuneup and Backup. To keep things simple, the program checks the status and if thing are fine you should see a row of four ticks across the screen. When an issue arises you’ll find an exclamation mark. To emphasis status, the program uses a traffic light style colour coding. If a problem arises, click Fix It button and the problem will usually be resolved. For the average user this is about as complicated as it gets.

When it comes to checking for viruses, this latest version has grouped antivirus and anti-spyware together, which not only makes more sense but also speeds up the scanning process considerably. BitDefender has always been a powerful package but the 2008 version is even better than we expected. As with similar tools, you can choose to run manually or setup a schedule to best suit you. Updates are automatic and when we were testing it out, seemed to arrive almost daily.

It’s not only the speed of scanning that has been optimised, as the scanning now also handles malware far more effectively and even supports the clearing out of rootkits, something previous packages didn’t. This means even if you’ve installed the program on a PC that is already infected, it will find it and eliminate it. Malware is isolated as it’s found and when found won’t even allow you to open the offending email let alone the file attached.

There is now a Games mode, which will automatically disable updates and popups when you’re playing online. This may not sound like much but if you’ve ever experienced these when gaming online, then you’ll know how infuriating they can be.

An internet security suite wouldn’t be complete these days without adding a little more and just as with Symantec with Norton 360, it’s a range of clean-up tools that add to Total Security. So, you’ll find utilities to clean up your registry entries, clear out duplicate files and generally clean up the system. There is even a defrag tool that works faster and better than the one shipping with Windows, so you’ll find this package really does live up to its name.

VERDICT

BitDefender Total Security 2008 has a lot to live up to, not only in terms of its name but also the rival competition on the market.

In both instances, we found it more than capable. So much so, that this may well our new favourite security product and it doesn’t cost the earth to protect your PC.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008

BitDefender was an excellent performer among security suites, but it’s best for experts who don’t need guidance regarding security extras and pop-up alerts and who don’t mind therough interface.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 ($40 for one PC, $50 for three PCs) pairs shining success with disappointing failure. It outperformed every other suite in crucial malware detection tests, unmasked every rootkit sample.

But this stellar performance behind the scenes was seriously marred by an unpleasant user experience. From aggravations with the initial installation to difficulties with warning pop-ups, BitDefender Internet Security 2008flaws are hard to brush off.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 did extremely well when subjected to AV-Test.org’s 674,589 inactive malware samples, detecting 98 percent of them. It also did the best job of detecting new, unknown malware in heuristics tests, with a 29 percent catch rate using one-month-old signatures. And it also tied for first with Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 for the fastest response (0 to 2 hours) to malware outbreaks.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 firewall successfully masked a protected PC against outside scans, but it displayed needless warnings when the Firefox Web browser tried to access the Internet. That program should be on any firewall’s list of known (and approved) applications.

The suite offers a good array of secondary features, including antiphishing, parental controls, antispam, and data privacy. But these extras need polish. The browser-based antiphishing tool didn’t block any sites until I enabled the feature’s heuristic detection, which is off by default. When I enabled parental control for other users, I wasn’t prompted to set a program password–but if you fail to do so and you set up your kids’ accounts with administrator rights, they’ll be able to turn off the parental controls.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 warning pop-ups did a poor job of guiding us through the steps of removing a detected e-mail worm (Warezov). The pop-up alert had options for ignoring, quarantining, or deleting the file. But perhaps because ther malware was lurking inside a .zip file, the security suite’s default option was to ignore the infection. Choosing to quarantine the archive failed, but rather than alerting me to the failure. the program just popped up the same window without the quarantine option. Choosing delete finally worked.

If BitDefender Internet Security 2008 interface and warnings were anywhere near as good as its virus detection engine, the suite would be easy to recommend. But its confusing pop-ups, program bugs, and high false positive rate make it best suited to a user who has strong technical skills and can at times make the right security choices without guidance from the software.

When Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0\7.0 works with a trial key file, the key file may expire prematurely, if after trial key installation: 

  • the system date was set forward for the time period which equals or exceeds the validity period of a trial key file and then it was set backward to its initial state – the validity period of a trial key expires and no other trial key can be installed.

This is a peculiar feature of the licensing library of Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0\7.0.

If another key file is already activated and is in use, then when you try to activate another key file the following error may occur:

  • License key file “C:\XXXXXXXX.key” cannot be added. License validity period has expired.

The error may occur if: 

  • in Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0\7.0 the current key is commercial and you try to add a trial key file as a reserve one. 
  • in Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0\7.0 the current key is commercial one and as a reserve one you try to add commercial key file whose validity period expires (has already expired) earlier than the installed commercial key.
